BSBI launches Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management Professional Master — academic response to Spain’s tourism challenges
Barcelona / Madrid / Berlin, 30. April 2025 — In the run-up to the upcoming vacation season, the Berlin School of Business and Innovation (BSBI) is sending a clear signal for the future of Spanish tourism. With the Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management Professional Master programme, which is now being offered in English and Spanish at the business school’s campuses in Barcelona and Madrid, BSBI is specifically addressing the growing demand for qualified specialists in one of Spain’s most important economic sectors.
The programme focuses on sustainable travel, travel technology, destination development and hotel strategy and provides expertise in digital marketing, customer experience and global tourism trends. It also enables students to complete an internship as part of a compulsory module that provides BSBI tourism students with open access to the tourism industry and its job market.
“The integration of a mandatory internship module into the study program will significantly improve the employability of our students by providing them with practical experience, industry exposure and a clearer professional focus — giving future graduates a distinct advantage in the Spanish job market,” explains Josipa Musura, former Campus Manager at BSBI Barcelona and current Quality Assurance Officer at BSBI in Spain.
The programme is part of a new academic initiative launched by BSBI following successful accreditation by the CUALIFICAM certification of the Fundación para el Conocimiento Madrimasd. This award guarantees compliance with the highest quality standards in the European Higher Education Area. For students, this means a high degree of transparency, academic reliability and international comparability of their degree. Employers, on the other hand, are guaranteed that graduates have practical skills at master’s level that have been taught according to recognize European standards.
Spain as one of the most popular travel destinations
“With record-breaking visitor numbers and an outstanding tourism heritage, Spain is not only a top travel destination, but also provides the perfect platform from which to navigate the future of global tourism,” comments Dr. Gemma Vallet, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at BSBI.
In 2024, Spain reached a significant milestone in the tourism sector. With 94 million international guests, the number of visitors increased by a full 10 percent compared to the previous year. This consolidated the country’s position as the world’s second most popular tourist destination — only France recorded more visitors, according to the UN World Tourism Barometer.
The tourism sector also once again proved to be a driving force for the Spanish economy: it generated a turnover of 126 billion euros and made a significant contribution of 12.3 percent to gross domestic product.
Academic internationalization as an opportunity
Especially in regions such as Andalusia, the Balearic Islands or the Canary Islands, where tourism not only ensures quality of life but is also the largest employer, it is becoming increasingly clear that economic success stands and falls with well-trained specialists and a sustainable tourism concept. BSBI is a member of the Asociación Española de Escuelas de Negocios (AEEN) and the European Union of Private Higher Education (EUPHE) and, with its campus in Spain, pursues the goal of offering practice-oriented higher education where it is particularly needed economically and socially.
