This 45-minute academic workshop addresses sustainability as a psychological and behavioral challenge, positioning psychological theory and empirical research as essential tools for understanding and promoting sustainable behavior. The session contributes to interdisciplinary dialogue between psychology and sustainability studies by integrating conceptual reflection with applied perspectives.

The workshop opens with a concise conceptual framing of sustainability within psychological science, highlighting the relevance of behavioral models for addressing contemporary environmental challenges. Dr. Kaddour then examines key theoretical frameworks of pro-environmental behavior, including the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Value–Belief–Norm theory. Particular attention is devoted to the psychological mechanisms underlying sustainable action, such as values, social norms, emotions, identity processes, and cognitive biases, with a focus on explaining the persistent gap between environmental attitudes and actual behavior.

Building on this theoretical foundation, the workshop explores how psychological insights can be translated into practice. Drawing on empirical research and illustrative examples from policy, organizational, and community contexts, Dr. Kaddour discusses evidence-based strategies for behavior change, including nudging, framing effects, and the activation of social norms. The session highlights how psychological research can inform the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective sustainability interventions.

The workshop concludes with a moderated discussion, inviting participants to reflect on theoretical implications, methodological challenges, and future research directions at the intersection of psychology and sustainability.
