Overview
Maria Pesli is a versatile media artist and researcher with an interdisciplinary background and studies in Film, Digital Forms of Art, and Cultural Management in UK and Greece. Her creative and academic inquiries revolve around the complexities of identity, belonging, and memory, exploring notions of selfhood, life narratives, diversity, and urban cross-culturalism within the context of visual culture. Her practice-led research utilizes a diverse methodological toolkit, including lens-based media, sound, and archival objects, to investigate life experiences of diverse social groups and implement participatory art projects with a focus on visual life narratives. She works mostly with film, video art, photography and installations and has shown her work in Greece, UK and Switzerland. Her methodology is further informed by a background in contemporary dance and physical theatre, utilising theatre techniques in facilitation processes for socially engaged participatory art.
Her professional trajectory is defined by a variety of collaborations with academic institutions and international organisations, including the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Panteion University, Athens School of Fine Arts, National Film Board of Canada, Al Jazeera International, ERIM (Equal Rights and Independent Media)(France), Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival (Germany), Research Centre for Gender Equality (KETHI), Museum of Political Exile “Ai-Stratis”, and Fournos theatre among else.
