Jonas Becker is a lecturer in design and visual communication at BSBI Hamburg, bringing over eight years of higher education experience combined with an international career in photography, graphic design, and creative entrepreneurship. He studied Integrated Design (2D, 3D, 4D) at the Hochschule Anhalt, Dessau—the city of the Bauhaus—where his training spanned applied arts, communication design, interactive design, product design, photography, film, and storytelling. He later earned an MA in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester, producing a dissertation entitled “Transgender People and Their (Mis)Representation in Thai Media”, which combined expert interviews, audience surveys, and media analysis, exemplifying his ability to bridge rigorous research with critical cultural insight. Jonas spent 16 years in Bangkok and 1.5 years in London, developing a rich, culturally diverse perspective that informs both his teaching and
professional work. In Bangkok, he taught at three national and international universities, delivering modules across design, communication, advertising, and journalism, mentoring students in research-informed, industry-relevant projects. During this time, he co-founded the creative agency Thinkatorium Co., Ltd., overseeing high-profile projects for clients including Agoda, Anon Pairot Design Studio, Robert Walters Recruitment, Grohe, and the Swiss and German Embassies. His photography and design work has been featured in prestigious publications such as Wallpaper Thailand, Thailand Tatler, The Nation (all Thailand), Form Magazine, Jetstar Asia (both Singapore), and PhotoNews and J´N´C Magazine (both Germany), highlighting his versatility across editorial, commercial, and cultural platforms. At BSBI, Jonas leads courses including Specialist Ways of Working, Principles in Practice (Design Foundation), External Context (Competitions), Professional Practice (Portfolio and Career Development), and the Final Major Project. His teaching emphasizes hands-on, research-informed learning, fostering critical thinking, conceptual creativity, and professional readiness. Under his guidance, students have won international design competitions and been published in online galleries and fanzines, demonstrating the measurable impact of his mentorship on emerging creative talent. Jonas is passionate about bridging theory and practice, cultivating interdisciplinary problem-solving, and mentoring students to develop their distinctive creative voices. Based in Hamburg, he continues to explore innovative teaching methodologies, integrating industry insight, international experience, collaborations and creative research to prepare students for success in the dynamic global landscape of design, visual communication, and media industries.
