Our team

Overview

Dr Sven Schottmann joined BSBI as Principal and Co-CEO in November 2025. He has more than twenty years’ work experience in the public and private education sectors across Australia, the Asia-Pacific and Europe. Prior to joining BSBI, he was Professor of International Politics and Associate Dean (Development and Partnerships) in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Ulster University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  He was previously College Director and Principal at Navitas pathway colleges in Perth and Newcastle, Director of Internationalisation in the Arts, Education and Law Group at Griffith University in Brisbane, and Regional Development Manager (South and Southeast Asia) at The University of Tasmania in Hobart.

With a background in International Relations and Political Economy, his publications focus on Southeast Asian politics, transnational education and intercultural dialogue in diverse societies. Dr Schottmann has been involved in research grants totaling over €3m from the Australian Research Council, the Australian UNESCO commission, the Ministry of Education in Singapore, the National Council of Professors in Malaysia and other funders.

He was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Germany, Singapore and Malaysia, completed a BA in International Studies at DePaul University in Chicago, an MSc in Asian Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and was awarded a PhD from Monash University. Dr Schottmann has provided consultancies for a range of Australian, international and multilateral organisations including the Australia-Malaysia Institute at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the State of Victoria, Mercer/ICC and others. Dr Schottmann is fluent in five languages, and passionate about the role which higher education plays in bringing about change for good.
